CHAPTER 27K

I Hate Lucy

David Branch’s Farm, NY

Carl yawned, stretched, and scratched himself, then headed for one of the three upstairs bathrooms, hoping he could get in, perform his ablutions, and get out before the gaggle of new kids got up and started their daily program of screaming and laughing. He was a little sore from what happened after the confrontation in the machine shed. Michelina had made good on her promise. A little grin surfaced on his lips as he thought of the celebration out in the trees.

Father was due back soon, and Carl needed a good scrubbing, a shave, and maybe a trim of his dark locks. He hoped Michelina could help him with his hair, and he hoped getting up early had granted him exclusive access to one of the bathrooms. He walked toward the closest one, but the door was closed, and a sliver of light stabbed at the relative darkness in the hall. He approached the door and knocked on it softly. “Done soon?” he asked through the door. The occupant didn’t speak, but he heard the water in the sink, the soap dispenser, and then the water stopped. The door rattled—the lock’s release—and swung open.

Lucy stood inside the bathroom, but she didn’t look up to meet his gaze. “I was going to take a shower. You’re welcome to join me.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” he said, keeping his voice low, calm.

She nodded her head once—a gesture he knew all too well—then glared up at him. “You know what I don’t think is a good idea?”

Shaking his head, Carl turned to go check the other bathrooms, but Lucy’s iron grip snapped over his wrist, and she pulled him around to face her. She pulled him hard. “I’ll tell you! I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to cross me like you did yesterday. Out in the machine shed? You remember, don’t you?”

Carl sighed and shook his wrist to dislodge her grip, but she hung on tight. “Let go, Lucy,” he said in an enervated voice. “Let’s just agree to live and let live. Sound good?”

“Too late. It’s too late, Carl. You drove Jack away. He won’t have anything to do with me! I went to his room last night wearing only my robe, and do you know what happened?”

“Lucy‍—‍”

“He called me a slut and pushed me away, Carl. And that’s your fault.”

“Oh, it’s my fault? I was the one who tried to manipulate Jack? I’m the one who made up a story about myself, something to get him wound up? That’s a load of bull excrement, Luce, and you know it.” Using his other hand, he peeled her grip off his wrist. He could have done it regardless of her response, but she allowed him to do it, hanging her head. “All I did was tell the kid the truth. If that drives people away from you, Luce, you should consider a change in ways.”

“Sure. Easy. Easy, right?” she said listlessly. “Like I said, it’s too late, Carl.
